SpaFlo Project: Sexy Fish Manchester Water Wall
Location: Manchester
Excellence in Commercial Projects
Background:
Caprice Holdings, the owner of Sexy Fish, approached the Special Projects Division at SpaFlo to design and build a one of its kind fully functioning cascading water wall for the new Sexy Fish restaurant in Manchester. The SpaFlo team has subsequently been awarded a second contract in an exotic location.
Solution:
This project features a one of a kind and never-before seen 7m x 5m fully functioning cascading water wall as the central feature of its all new Manchester restaurant bar which opened in October 2023. The ‘glass’ water wall is made from Plexiglass which is then glued together.
The SpaFlo Difference:
The build showcases 3 key areas of SpaFlo expertise which has enabled this idea to become a reality;
- Overall scale - at 7m x 5m this is a huge one-off piece of aqua design and engineering
- Shape - wrapping what is a effectively a U-shaped existing wall requires great technical knowledge of design, fabrication and installation
- Materials assessment and manufacturing methodology - the 3 key materials used; swimming pool plexiglass, marine grade stainless steel 316L and water all require an expert level of competence
Additional Technical Detail of main elements:
- The plexiglass was imported from Holland and lifted into position with a spider crane inside the restaurant. The largest individual piece of plexiglass was 5.0m x 1.75m x 30mm thick and weighed around 260kgs. The job required four of these pieces jointed together to form the main wall.
- SpaFlo manufactured a patented overflowing weir in 316L grade stainless steel for the upper troughs. The base collection troughs were also created in 316L grade stainless steel.
- The plant room is on a mezzanine level in the basement floor below the main restaurant. Water is collected in a balancing tank in the plant room using a similar engineering practice to a swimming pool. Three variable speed pumps (one for each wall) draw water from the balance tank and send it over a 20m of head journey back to the top of the waterwall.
- We use silver stabilised hydrogen peroxide to eliminate all microorganisms from the water system.
