Water & Wellness: Is Wet January the New Trend for 2025?
It’s that time of year. After the excess and indulgence of December, we turn our attention inwards. Whether you’re going full “New Year, New Me” or you want to make some subtle changes for your New Year’s well-being, starting 2025 right is the first step.
Some people opt for Veganuary, join a gym or take up yoga, while others choose dry January to help detox after Christmas. Well at SpaFlo, we prefer the term ‘Wet January’.
No, we don’t mean drinking even more alcohol or even going walking in the rain (although if that’s your thing, don’t let us stop you!). We mean using water as part of your therapeutic, health and wellness journey - it’s one of our top health and wellness tips for the new year.
But what does it mean? This blog explores water as a super element and how it might help with detoxing, hydration, brain function and mental clarity, gut health, circulation and much more.
Prioritising Your Health For The New Year
We all know the basics of New Year well-being. Eating more fruit and vegetables, cutting down on processed food high in fat and sugar, avoiding alcohol, exercising more, and getting more sleep are all vital. But many of us overlook the importance of water in all this.
From making sure we’re hydrated to embracing its soothing and transformational qualities, water is a super element. Let’s explore how we can factor water into our New Year resolutions for health.
-
Hydration: Most adults need to drink around 2.5 litres of water per day. Water brings nutrients to cells, helps rid our body of waste, protects organs and joints and helps regulate our temperature. Our hair, skin and nails also look better when properly hydrated.
Drinks that contain caffeine, sugar, alcohol or other additives can all affect our bodies. Instead, try adding a few pieces of fruit such as orange, lemon, lime or berries, a couple of slices of cucumber, or a sprig or two of mint to add flavour. -
Relaxation: We all know how good a hot bath can be. Sinking into a soothing bath can relax our muscles, soothe tired joints, reduce tension and help us sleep better. It’s also great for our mental health, giving us a moment of calm in our busy lives.
Resolve to make time for regular baths, especially as part of your bedtime routine, to focus on yourself. For something even better, treat yourself to a luxury bespoke hot tub and spa complete with bubbles, lights and electrical controls. -
Hydrotherapy & Contrast Therapy: Hydrotherapy can be a great way to relax, as well as treat a range of injuries and conditions, improving circulation and reducing inflammation. Whether it’s as simple as switching between hot and cold showers or investing in a ContraSpa with different temperature pools, it’s a fantastic way to approach the healing benefits of water.
-
Immersion in Water: Simply floating or submerging yourself in water can bring a host of relaxing and therapeutic benefits such as decreased anxiety and a calmer mind. You can do this in a swimming pool but a specialist floatation tank that blocks out unwanted noise and light can be even more relaxing.
-
Water Exercise: Exercising is always beneficial but in water, it can be even more so. The buoyancy of the water can take the weight and stress off our muscles and joints, providing a much gentler workout. Activities like water aerobics or water yoga can be great for people of all ages.
Of course, good old-fashioned swimming is a great choice as well. While still being low-impact, it builds endurance, strength and cardiovascular fitness. A swimming pool is always the safest place to swim, but many people embrace the benefits of open water or natural swimming in rivers, lakes and the sea. However, only do so if you are a competent swimmer, and never alone. -
Mindfulness & Water: Spending time in nature is proven to help our mental health, promote calmness, reduce anxiety and improve our confidence, all of which can positively impact our physical health as well.
This year, aim to spend time near rivers, lakes, ponds or the sea to reconnect with nature. Leave your devices at home, slow down and embrace the natural world. Why not take a flask of tea or a good book and let the hours drift by?
Water is essential for life both on a biological and emotional level. In 2025, invest in yourself by embracing its therapeutic benefits in the comfort of your own home. Installing a spa, hot tub, hydrotherapy pool or swimming pool could be the best investment you ever make in yourself.
